Office hours: a first look at FinOpsHubs.com
All posts
This session had a genuinely useful debugging lesson, a practical FinOps technique, and the first real look at something Allyte has been building quietly.
The private-networking gotcha
One attendee spent several days debugging a Kusto ingestion failure and had built a custom workaround before the root cause surfaced: a storage account behind private networking doesn’t treat Kusto or Fabric Eventhouse as a “trusted Microsoft service,” so the ingestion pull fails unless the storage account is public or a full copy job is used instead. Roland Krummenacher explained why: the toolkit’s “copy job” isn’t actually copying anything. It tells Kusto a file exists on blob storage, and Kusto itself pulls it, which is exactly the step that breaks under private networking. A true Azure Data Factory copy job would work here, because ADF has its own storage access. If you’re running Fabric Eventhouse ingestion behind private networking, this is worth checking before you lose a few days to it.
Spotting new deployments from cost data alone
Two attendees raised a problem a lot of teams will recognize: without direct inventory data, how do you tell what got deployed in the last 30 days using only exported cost data? The approach discussed was comparing resource IDs period over period, with real caveats (a stopped VM disappears from cost data without being deleted, and names get reused). It’s not a solved problem, but it’s a useful starting technique if inventory data isn’t something you have.
A first look at FinOpsHubs.com
Michael Flanakin gave the fullest description yet of FinOpsHubs.com: a free, standalone web experience that sits directly on top of a customer’s own FinOps hubs deployment, browser to cluster, with no data flowing through Allyte. He described it as “kind of like cost analysis effectively for hubs,” and confirmed it’s still early and not yet public. If you want a walkthrough before it opens more broadly, office hours is one of the places to ask.
One more data point, for anyone wondering how far the toolkit has actually spread: FinOps hubs now deploys into Azure Government, Azure operated by 21Vianet, and Microsoft Sovereign Cloud environments, which is a good proxy for the kind of organization running it.
Come see what’s new next time. Office hours run every other Wednesday, open to anyone.
